Welcome to the Dollhouse
Published in Paperback by Faber & Faber (September, 1996)
Author: Todd Solondz
Average review score:

Evil and funny!
While you read this screenplay, you'll regret laughing at such a sad and tortured little girl. But then you'll say "Oh, what the hell..." and laugh some more. This is a comedy, and it's supposed to make you laugh. For people who like black comedies.

a great movie, and a great script!
On of the funniest scripts I've ever read. Todd Solondz's script is bleak, and will probably offend most. It takes a certain kind of taste to enjoy.

Windows Nt Server Training Guide

A quick overview of NT Server without getting bogged down.
I was able to read this book in one evening. For a person with some hands on knowlege of NT but no training, the book cleared up some of the mystery. It is well organized and written in an easily understandable style. I highly recommend it to anyone getting started with NT Server 4.0.

Best real-world, hands-on NT book I've seen!
I was studying for my MCSE, and looking for a book as a supplement to the study guides that would give me real-world scenarios and provide me with an understanding of what really happens to NT installations and deployments. This book was head and shoulders above all of the generic NT "textbooks" I found. In fact, two days after purchasing it I had used information from the book to : 1. Recover from SID corruption and 2. Optimize a "textbook" installation to increase performance by over 20%! I highly recommend this book!

Wrapped in Gray
Published in Paperback by Upset Publishing (01 September, 2002)
Author: Todd Bunker
Average review score:

It definitely kept me reading
I am generally not a fiction reader, but when I do, I like to read something that seems real. Wrapped in Gray fit the bill. There are a couple spots where there are some far fetched ideas (how were they fugitives for so long with all that they did?), but you don't doubt their plausability. Beyond the plausable aspect, it was a story that kept me reading. It wasn't all action, but there was a certain wonder that made it an edge of the seat ride. It was unpredictable, and the mystery of what was going to happen never revealed itself until the end, which made the read worthwhile.

The only complaints that I had were:

1) Having it set in the place that I live, I felt like there were a few too many place name drops (you don't have to say that you are at the Space Needle to show that you are in Seattle)

2) There was a certain sexual overtone to some of the characters that got in the way of what seemed to be the point... or at least, their sexual actions got in the way.

All in all, though, worth the read, and it definitely makes me anxious to see what Todd Bunker can come up with for a sophomore effort.

Wrapped in Gray is Totally Totally
This first novel from Seattle author Todd Bunker is a real "page-turner," to use an old-fashioned but very relevant cliché. His lead, Jonah, is an everyman caught at a crossroads. His reaction to a serious situation isn't surprising or different from how many people would react, but the chain of events it triggers is what will continuously surprise and entertain you.

An examination of the media that sensationalized an potentially led to the WTO riots in Bunker's hometown of Seattle, Wrapped in Gray focuses first on good storytelling and doesn't get too "preachy," a fact I appreciate very much.

Throw strong sexual overtones and hot lesbian action on top of chair-gripping action as Jonah and two University of Washington co-eds embark on a series of high-stakes adventures, and you've got a very, very strong debut novel.

Let's Roll: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage
Published in Hardcover by Tyndale House Publishers (20 August, 2002)
Authors: Lisa Beamer, Ken Abraham, and Betty Robison
Average review score:

A Brave and Powerful Testimony
Only handful of times have I read a book that has made a profound difference in my life--Let's Roll by Lisa Beamer is one of those books. I started it at 10:30 in the evening and didn't put it down until 3 a.m.! Usually I'm out cold after two pages!

In the pages of the book, Lisa shares her faith and life so intimately and fully that you can't help but identify with her and her family and what they've endured. It's a remarkable testimonial of a real and practical faith in the strength, power, comfort, and ultimately the salvation of Jesus Christ! I think if you're a non-believer this book may make you one, and if you are a believer it can strength your faith immensely.

Lisa and those involved in publishing the book have taken a situation so horribly evil and bereft of God and used it as a way to honor Him and display His grace! That's a miracle! I felt personally honored that Lisa and her family would shared their tragedy, their faith, and their example with the rest of us!

To stay I strongly recommend this book would be an understatement. Please borrow or buy a copy and read it--even if you think you just don't have the time! It's a quick read, and it will change you!!!

An Amazing Story of Courage and Faith!
Let's Roll is an incredible story about Lisa Beamer and her family. Before writing my review, I read over some others. Not only was I horrified that people could write such things about a woman with three kids in need, but I was almost brought to tears thinking that people could only write those things because they were offended by Lisa Beamer's immense amount of faith in the onr true and living God! Even if she did write the book to get money, can you blame her? She is now a single mother who is needing to support three children. If it was money she was going for...why would she add such passionate input about her faith in the Lord? All she wanted was for people to know about a true hero, for people to be able to more information on a very important event in our country, and for people to know that you can keep faith and hope in a time of need. Lisa Beamer was an inspiration to me and many others that I have shared the book with. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read such horrible things about this heroic story! Look again people! Pull your heads out of your butts and realize that there is more to life than bringing the people down that have miraculously found a reason to live another day after their tragedy. I think I've said all that needs to be said...

Hope in the face of tragedy
If anyone needs to read an example of the difference which being a Christian makes in this world, this book is it. Lisa Beamer writes about the childhoods and upbringing of herself and her husband Todd, and how their faith in God influenced every decision they made. She describes their meeting, courtship, marriage, and parenthood and shows her husband to be a strong Christian. His biggest weakness seemed to be a tendency to work too hard and spend too little time with his family, but the Beamers worked out this problem with the help of Todd's Christian friends, who kept him accountable for a more balanced lifestyle. Lisa describes how she first learned of the terrible tragedy which claimed her husband's life, and how she survived the difficult days after September 11. She shows how Christian friends stepped in to help her, as a grateful nation showered her with notes, prayers, and gifts for her unborn baby. She tells about her meetings with President Bush and famous members of the media, such as Larry King. She also tells the intensely personal moments of having to go through family holidays and the birth of her daughter without her husband at her side. Lisa's faith was tested and strengthened by events over which she had no control, because ultimately she knew WHO was in control. This is a wonderful and inspiring book.

Treasure Island
Published in Paperback by Cethial & Bossche (April, 1998)
Authors: Robert Louis Stevenson and Justin Todd
Average review score:

Interesting Pirate Adventure
Jim Hawkins, a young man living in rural England with his parents, helps run an inn with his parents. His life changes forever when a mysterious dying pirate takes residence at the inn. The shadowy pirate is often on the lookout for strangers who begin to show up in search of the pirate. Rum finally takes its toll on the pirate and he dies, leaving behind a mysterious chest that the strangers are interested in. Upon examination, Jim discovers a treasure map.

With the help of Jim's adult friends, a crew is formed to go in search of the pirate's buried treasure on a remote tropical island. The journey is uneventful until, Jim saves the day when he realizes that their crew consists mainly of pirates who hope to cause mutiny upon reaching the island. Ultimately, a raging battle takes place on the island where Jim and his friends must outwit the pirates who are led by the one-legged Long John Silver.

For a children's book, this book had a lot of inappropriate material - drinking and violence. I also had a tough time with the old-English writing style and the nautical terms. This book was ahead of its time, though, in terms of the adventure it described, but I was hoping for more. Fans of H. Rider Haggard (ala King Solomon's Mines) will enjoy this book but I was sort of happy to be done with it as some parts were engaging and others were muddled.

Classic Adventure Novel
"Treasure Island" is the classic adventure novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. Set on the high seas amid treasures and pirates, it is the story of a young boy's adventure. "Treasure Island" has been done by everyone from Disney to the Muppets. It's been imitated many times and influenced countless books and movies.

A mysterious pirate shows up at an inn owned by Jim Hawkin's mother. The pirate is killed by a gang of rogues, but Jim finds a treasure map belonging to the pirate. Jim then embarks on a journey to far away island to find the treasure. Of course, nobody can be trusted - especially the cook, Long John Silver. With his peg leg and parrot, Silver is the stereotypical pirate. Once the island is reached, sides are chosen - the mutinous pirates against the ship's crew. Jim goes on a journey within a journey on the island, going from one side to another, as the treasure is hunted for.

Everyone should read this book at some point. It's especially good for young boys, due to the fact that the main character (Jim) is a young boy. It's well crafted, and easy to read. And it's hard to put down once you get going. What else can you ask for?

To the hesitating reader
I never did read this book as I was growing up and have now read it for the first time as an adult. I always thought that this book would not be very good but I was wrong.

I write this review for those students who may hesitate to read Treasure Island. This book is a story of high adventure. In it is the tale of a young boy who comes to possess a treasure map and goes off on a whirlwind adventure filled with sea voyages, pirates, island adventure and treasure. Stevenson wonderfully portrays the characters of young Jim Hawkins, the hero of the book, the fabled Long John Silver, Billy Bones and Ben Gunn. Each adds their own sense of mystery and suspense to the story. The settings of the story from the Admiral Benbow Inn to the Hispaniola, their sailing vessel, to the island itself are very vivid and make you feel as if you are really there. The adventure to and finally on Treasure Island is filled with secret meetings, battle scenes and a quest to find a long since buried fortune in gold. The novel is truly great and is a very entertaining and interesting read.

For those adults who have never read this novel definitely read it and for those who have already read it, read it again it is well worth it. The swashbuckling adventures of Long John Silver and his men, along with Jim Hawkins, are truly timeless. If you have children of age, share the story with them. It is truly a family classic worth sharing with generations to come.

The Wave

This was a good book!
= This was a good book!
Reviewer: Quinones from Peekskill, NY
This book took place in Palo Alto, California in Gordon High School. It started when Mr.Ross(the teacher) showed the class a
movie about the Holocaust. "Experiment of the wave", strengh through disciplne and strengh through community. "The Wave" is
the group that joined the experiment which took over a large number of students. The administrators of the school start to
observe the class with the experiment.
Two students opposed "The Wave" and one was threatened and the other one got beat up. Lauri also opposed "The Wave"
and wrote an article about it in the school newspaper "The Grapevine".
At the end of the book, "The Wave" was dissolved although it taught a great lesson, I think it did more bad than good.

This book was 3rd Person (Someone else is telling the story)

READ THIS BOOK!!!

Highly recommended for adults and kids to read together
I'll start out by saying to adults out there that this is a book I would highly recommend...for your youngsters. First, it has characters that young adults like to read about--high schoolers, cheerleaders, football players, etc. Strasser also includes minor characters for break away from the action or for comic relief. I know my students enjoyed the characters, especially the girls who enjoyed the interaction between them and the fact that the progagonist is a female. Second, it deals with things that many young adults should know more about and/or have strong feelings about: the Holocaust and peer pressure. Discussing Nazi-ism with my class prior to reading the book caused them to ask many of the questions that the characters asked. The book helped them to understand the Holocaust better and lead to a discussion about peer pressure and the importance of setting your limits clearly before someone in high school pressures you into something (drugs, drinking, sex, stereotyping). Finally, it's a well written book. It has short chapters (everyone likes those), it's fast paced (because the book takes place over a week or so) and the main points are easilly understandable because the author has the characters repeat important information in different ways several times to make sure the young adult reader is not getting lost in sub-plots. In all, an excellent work that more parents or other adults should read with their children.

A must-read about consequenses of group pressure.
Can you imagine recreating a leader like Hitler and a group that followed him like the Nazis? Well, this book does. The Wave is based on a true occurance in Palo Alto, California in a High School History Class. This book is about a classroom experiment that goes too far. Mr. Ross is a High School teacher that teaches a group of students that form "The Wave". When most of the school gets caught up in "The Wave", two students realize it has gone too far. But can they stop it before it's too late? I thought The Wave was a very good book and really made you think if something like this would ever really happen again. I give The Wave 5 stars.

Sense & Sensibility (Everyman's Poetry Series)
Published in Paperback by Everyman (November, 1997)
Authors: Jane Austin, Janet Todd, and Jane Austen
Average review score:

Good... but not great...
Personally, I think that Sense and Senibility was a good book, but lacks the wit that was constantly present in Pride and Predjudice.

While there was conflict in Sense and Sensibility (both in the sister's jealousy and the the scorn from their lovers later), Austen didn't allow her characters to really address the conflict directly. (For example, why didn't Willoughby explain himself to Marianne, as opposed to using Elinor as a go-between?)

While this may be the subtle temper which reflects Austen's style, it also makes it more difficult for the reader to discern any true sense of feeling.

The plot is "okay" - boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy scorns girl. In Sense and Sensibility, it's done twice, in parallel. The only difference between one and the other is how each girl copes with it. But, from reading several of Austen's books, I've found that plot development wasn't the author's strong suit.

Jane Austen's real strength lies in character development. Her major characters are well developed and dynamic. An interesting aspect of Sense and Sensibility is how Elinor, the logical and practical sister became more emotional, while the ever-feeling Marianne developed a more practical view of her situation by the end of the book.

This isn't one I would recommend for folks that have never read Jane Austen before (read Pride and Predjudice first), but it is a book I would recommend it to anybody who likes Jane Austen's style.

Another wonderful Jane Austen novel.......
Did anyone else feel a distinct sense of disappointment at the revelation of the mercenary, materialistic nature of the otherwise handsome and dashing Mr Willoughby's character? However, I think Marianne's heart-break was eased by the stead-fast and loving Colonel Brandon. I love this novel. I had been forever avoiding experiencing any other Jane Austen novels for fear they would not live up to the high expectations created by the fabulous "Pride and Prejudice", however, when hearing of the imminent arrival of the fabulous Emma Thompson's adapted version at local cinemas, I decided to take the chance and read this book. I'm glad I did! This is another Austen gem. Elinor and Marianne are wonderful characters, as are all the others. If you are like I was and are afraid of spoiling your first Austen experience with another, don't be. "Sense and Sensibility" is another Austen triumph. Marriage, society and class are again given a unique Austen work over!

Beautiful
Anyone who gives this book a bad review has no class. Jane Austen is one of the most celebrated writers in history. You just have to get past the fancy words. Beneath that is a classic and romantic story. Sense and Sensibility is the best romance novel I have ever read. I would recommend watching the movie first, though, if your Old English vocabulary isn't very strong.

Forrest Gump
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: Winston Groom and Rebecca Todd
Average review score:

How did the author manage to write such an incredible book?
This book is just incredible. At first, it's a bit difficult to the spelling and grammar of Winston Groom (AKA Forrest Gump), but as soon as you adjust to it, this book will make you laugh out loud. If I had to give it a movie-type appropriateness rating, it would probably be PG-13, the same as the movie's, because while any person young or old could enjoy it, there is some launguage and content that the young 'uns don't need to hear just yet. A very funny trip through history--too bad we can't read this in our history class instead of the dreary and boring text books that are forced upon us.

Even within the first 20 pages, I was laughing out as Forrest Gump describes his day out with Jenny Curran at a movie theater, and his experiences with his all-state football team.

An amazing book. I will soon start reading the sequel--Gump & Co--can't wait. Hope Groom writes a third book.

FORGET THE MOVIE, THE BOOK IS THE BEST WAY TO GO!
I first read Forest Gump when I was in the 6th grade! And now that I'm in the 10th grade it is still one of the most memorable books I've ever experienced. I read it after seeing the movie and the book surpasses it by far. Forest is a guy who when growing up didn't get it easy, he was considered stupid by almost everyone, except his lovin mama. Winston Groom writes the book hilariously! I found myself laughing out loud on numerous occasions and I still giggle every now and then at the embarrassing, goffy, and out of this world situations Forest got himself into. Now this book is more than a barrel of laughs, throught the book you will experience every emotion. From running through a torpedo of bullets in the war, to just kicking back and playing the harmonica. It's told from Gump's point of view and Groom never breaks character. At the end of this book you will have experienced a lifetime of memories, and you'll still be yearning for more!

I got to pee
Ok, I've studied english for 5 years. I saw the movie, that I got in DVD because it is really good, and then I discovered that it was based in the book by Winston Groom. I bought it, and that was my first ennglish novel- and it was awesome. I understanded almost all things (but Gump's narration is really bad-written, with ortography mistakes, but it makes it funnier), and I laughed a lot- its a really hilarious novel.
Forrest Gump is an idiot with a IQ of 70, and he tells us his amazing life- he becames to be a football player, a Vietnam-war veteran, a musician, a table tennis professional player,an astronaut, a wrestler, a chess player, a shrimp-bussiness tycoon....! It can sound impossible, but the book makes it real, and its a lot better (and different!) that the film. Read it!

The Domain Book of Intuitive Home Design: How to Decorate Using Your Personality Type
Published in Hardcover by Clarkson N. Potter (November, 1998)
Authors: Judy George and Todd Lyon
Average review score:

The most engaging and insightful home decorating book
This is the first home decorating book that held my attention for an entire evening! Ms. George's personality quiz was fun to take and revealed so much about my personal taste in decorating. At last I understand why I like what I like...and why it's so different from most of my friends and family.

Anyone moving into a new home should read this book with their mate or significant other before making purchases. By taking the quiz, they can help understand the similarities and differences of their choices. I believe by understanding each other's personality type it will help them resolve purchasing conflicts and come to a meeting of the minds in what they buy.

This book is valuable, insightful and enjoyable....quite an evening's entertainment. It's also a "must-have" gift for brides and grooms and people moving into new homes!

Great photos and very entertaining!
I really enjoyed reading The Domain Book of Intuitive Home Design. It was fun answering the quiz and discovering more about my own decorating style. It is difficult finding a good book that deals with "determining your decorating style". I have searched through many books, and only a few deal specifically with decorating style. Most books on style focus on a specific style such as Country French, or Shabby Chic, or Cottage. I do not own my own home, but I plan to eventually. This book gave me a head start on choosing my decorating style.

The book is organized so well and the sections deal specifically with each personality. This is very helpful and very entertaining. Although my decorating style is Artisan, I read through the other sections about the Visionary, Idealist, and Adventurer. The book even discusses what to do with a "split personality". It also had some good information about dealing with people with different personalities. It is interesting that people can have such different tastes. Thank you for this entertaining reference source.

Refreshing! Encourages self-expression in the home!
Gone are the days where everyone's home has to look the same! With rich photography and easy-to-read text, this book celebrates the diversity and individuality of people through home decorating. The quiz helps to clarify in your own mind the overall look you are trying to achieve and gives you the words to verbalize it - invaluable in shopping or working with a decorator! This book was tremendously beneficial in helping me to minimize costly and disappointing mistakes.

I highly recommend the book as well as a visit to one of Judy George's Domain stores!!
